Trend Receipt · Slugging (petrolatum as the last night-time step)

Slugging: does sealing your skin with petrolatum overnight work?

Slugging means a thin layer of petrolatum as the last step at night. This one actually has a paper trail, with a couple of caveats.

01 · The trend

Popularised on social video; a long-standing dermatology habit for very dry skin.

02 · The claim

“A layer of petroleum jelly overnight locks in moisture and repairs the skin barrier.”

03 · What the evidence says

  • Petrolatum is one of the most effective occlusives studied: it sharply reduces water loss from the skin's surface.
  • Research on barrier-damaged skin found petrolatum also helped the barrier recover, not just sit on top.
  • It's generally well tolerated and fragrance-free, which suits sensitive and very dry skin.
  • Evidence on breakouts is thin; on oily or acne-prone skin it may feel heavy.

04 · The verdict

well-supported

For dry or irritated skin, a thin overnight layer of plain petrolatum is well supported. Less useful for oily skin.

05 · Watch-outs

  • Use a thin layer over your moisturiser. More isn't better.
  • Skip it over strong actives (retinoids, acids) at first; sealing them in can increase irritation.

The Receipt

  1. 01Petrolatum is a proven occlusive and barrier helper.
  2. 02Best for dry, tight or irritated skin; optional for oily skin.
  3. 03Thin layer, last step, not over fresh actives.

FAQ · Quick answers

Is slugging good for acne-prone skin?
Evidence is limited. Petrolatum itself is widely considered low-risk for pores, but the heavy layer can feel congesting. Try it on a small area or only on dry patches first.
Can I slug over retinol?
Be careful. Sealing a retinoid in can increase irritation. Many people slug on nights they skip actives, or put petrolatum only on dry areas.
Do I need a special slugging product?
No. Plain petroleum jelly is the ingredient with the evidence; fragrance-free is best.
