01 · In plain English

“With ceramides” is printed on many moisturizers. Does it matter?

02 · What it does

Ceramides are a major part of the lipid “mortar” of the stratum corneum, alongside cholesterol and free fatty acids.

Formulas usually combine them with other lipids and humectants; the whole formula matters more than the word on the front.

03 · What the evidence says

  • Supporting a dry or irritated barrier as part of a moisturizer.limited evidence

04 · Insufficient evidence

  • Claims that a specific ceramide percentage or “ratio” delivers a defined result.

05 · Compatibility

  • Pairs with essentially everything; a useful buffer when using retinoids or acids.
