INCI: Glycerin
Glycerin (glycerol) is one of the most studied, least hyped humectants in skincare. What it does, why it’s in almost everything, and who benefits most.

Glycerin is near the top of most moisturizer ingredient lists. It rarely gets marketing attention, but it does a lot of the work.
Glycerin is a humectant that attracts water to the outer layer of skin. It also occurs naturally in skin and plays a role in barrier function and hydration.
It’s inexpensive, stable and well tolerated, which is why so many formulas use it as a base hydrator.
“Glycerin pulls water out of your skin in dry air.”
In a well-made moisturizer, glycerin is paired with emollients and occlusives. In practice glycerin-containing moisturizers improve hydration.
