01 · The short version

“Dry” and “dehydrated” get used interchangeably. The distinction isn’t a medical one, but it’s a useful way to choose products.

02 · How to tell

  • Often “dry”: rough, flaky, feels dry all the time and everywhere, little shine. Often lifelong.
  • Often “dehydrated”: tight or dull, fine crinkly lines, can still be oily in the T-zone. Often comes and goes with weather, over-cleansing or actives.

03 · What helps each

Most moisturizers combine three types of ingredient. Lean on the one you need most.

04 · Habits that make a difference

Short, lukewarm showers; gentle cleanser; moisturizer within a few minutes of washing, on damp skin; a humidifier in dry rooms. These are the AAD’s core tips for dry skin.

05 · The science

The outer skin layer holds water using natural moisturizing factors and lipids. Hot water, harsh cleansers, dry air and some actives disrupt both.

06 · What might help

  • Regular moisturizer use for dry skin.well-supported
  • Glycerin, urea and petrolatum in moisturizers.well-supported
  • Ceramide-containing moisturizers.limited evidence

07 · Insufficient evidence

  • Drinking more water as a fix for dry skin, beyond normal hydration.

The Receipt

  1. 01Dry needs oil and sealing; dehydrated needs water and gentleness.
  2. 02Moisturize damp skin; turn the water down.

Education, not a diagnosis. If something changes quickly, hurts, bleeds, or worries you, see a dermatologist.

Questions people ask

Can oily skin be dehydrated?
It can feel tight and dull while still shiny, often from over-cleansing or drying actives. A light humectant moisturizer helps.
Does drinking water hydrate your skin?
Normal hydration matters for health, but drinking extra water hasn’t been shown to fix dry skin. Moisturizer and gentle cleansing do more.
