01 · The short version

Skincare feeds are full of 10-step routines. Most skin does well with three steps used consistently, plus one targeted active if you need it.

02 · Step 1: a gentle cleanser

Choose a non-stripping, fragrance-free cleanser. Wash with lukewarm water and pat dry. Skin shouldn’t feel tight afterwards.

03 · Step 2: a moisturizer

Look for humectants (glycerin, hyaluronic acid) plus barrier lipids (ceramides) or occlusives (petrolatum, dimethicone). Gel-creams suit oily skin; richer creams suit dry skin.

04 · Step 3: sunscreen, every morning

Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. In a randomized trial, people who used sunscreen daily showed no detectable increase in skin aging over four and a half years, unlike those who used it at their own discretion.

05 · When to add a fourth step

Add one targeted active for your main goal, then wait several weeks before adding anything else.

06 · The science

Many “skin problems” are driven or worsened by irritation from too many products. A minimal routine reduces that and makes it easier to tell what’s working.

07 · What might help

  • Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen for preventing visible sun aging.well-supported
  • Regular moisturizer use for dry skin.well-supported
  • Gentle, non-stripping cleansing.limited evidence

08 · Insufficient evidence

  • Toners, essences and mists as essential steps.

Questions people ask

Do I need a toner?
No. Toners can be pleasant or carry actives, but they aren’t a required step.
Do oily skin types need moisturizer?
Usually yes, just a lighter one. Skipping moisturizer often leads to over-drying and irritation, especially with acne treatments.
