01 · In plain English

Blackheads, clogged pores and small bumps are common reasons people buy a “BHA”. Salicylic acid is the main one.

02 · What it does

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid. It’s oil-soluble, so it can work inside the pore lining, loosening the dead cells and oil that form clogs.

It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties. Over-the-counter acne products typically use 0.5–2%; higher strengths are used in professional peels.

03 · Who it’s for

  • Oily, acne-prone skin with blackheads and clogged pores.
  • Rough, bumpy texture on the face or body.

04 · What the evidence says

  • Mild acne and clogged pores (as an over-the-counter option).limited evidence
  • Rough texture and the look of blackheads.limited evidence

05 · Myths, checked

  • “Salicylic acid shrinks pores.”

Pore size is largely genetic. Clearing clogs can make pores look less noticeable; it doesn’t change their size.

    insufficient evidence

  • “Salicylic acid works as well as prescription acne treatments.”

Reviews find the evidence for OTC salicylic acid is weaker than for benzoyl peroxide or retinoids.

    limited evidence

06 · Insufficient evidence

  • Daily high-strength use for faster results. It mostly adds dryness and irritation.

07 · How to use it

  • Start 2–3 times a week as a cleanser, toner or leave-on product, then increase if your skin is comfortable.
  • Follow with moisturizer, and use sunscreen in the morning.

08 · Pairs well / go carefully

Pairs well with

Go carefully with

  • Stacking with other strong exfoliants (AHAs) or a retinoid on the same night when you’re starting out.
  • Broken or very irritated skin.
