INCI: Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil
Tea tree oil is the most popular natural acne remedy. A small trial is encouraging; here’s how to use it without irritation, and its limits.

Tea tree oil is the go-to “natural” acne fix. There is some evidence, but it’s thin, and neat oil can irritate.
Tea tree oil has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in lab studies.
A small 12-week open-label pilot study of a tea tree oil gel reported fewer acne lesions, but it had no control group. A Cochrane review of complementary acne therapies found low-quality evidence overall.
“Natural means no side effects.”
Undiluted tea tree oil can irritate and cause allergic contact dermatitis, especially when it oxidizes.
